Hi, I’m Shannon Ginn Robinson—a functional medicine health coach (board-certified through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching) with a master’s degree in public health and a dedication to social justice.
I believe that both the big and small pictures need to be taken into consideration when problem-solving—it’s how my brain works! I’m particularly interested in health on both micro- and macro levels because I’m strongly aware that one affects the other.
The practice of functional medicine resonates with me because an individual’s whole context—from their uniqueness to their bigger environment—becomes part of the equation of what health looks like for them. Then, the path towards wellness comes from answering a series of questions about what habits would lead to optimal health, plus identifying and overcoming various obstacles standing in the way.
For example: I’ve had the privilege of a white, middle-class up-bringing, but I’ve had the equal privilege of living over eight years abroad, in Panama as a Peace Corps volunteer. I’ve seen how infrastructure, class, race, culture, education, and so much more can bear down on an individual’s health choices, from whether to quit smoking to when to call the doctor. As your health coach, I will look with you to find what works within the context of the goals we set together and then, whether it’s meditation or marathon, supplements or physiotherapy, or all of the above, I will help you get you to the finish line.
One more thing: I’m a mom of three kids, ages ranging from college (my eldest) to elementary school, so I know deeply what it is like to feel overwhelmed by the details of life and how hard it can be to put self-care in the mix. My functional medicine path to health is paved with a scheduled exercise routine, solid sleep hygiene, contemplative quiet time, and preparing a diverse range of nutritious meals. Routine is key—otherwise my busy family life could take over everything. BUT, equally important is to be realistic, flexible and compassionate. As your health coach, you and I will walk the line of accountability. I won't allow you to be too hard on yourself but neither will I let you wiggle out of your commitment to the goals we set.
Ultimately, figuring out what the right “medicine” is for you is a fun puzzle for my brain to chew on—and I’m excited to get started!
